From the diagram we can observe that, ‘a’ and ‘x’ are opposite to each other and hence they are vertical angles!

Hence their value should be equal to each other.

This gives, value of ‘x’ = value of ‘a’ = 70°.

Example 2: Given below is the diagram of the intersection of two straight lines. If the value of ‘x’ = 85°, then find the value of ‘y’ from the diagram shown below.

Given, x = 85°

From the diagram we can observe that, ‘x’ and ‘y’ are opposite to each other and hence they are vertical angles!

Hence their value should be equal to each other.

This gives, value of ‘y’ = value of ‘x’ = 85°.
