A typical eukaryotic cell cycle divides approximately every 24 hours. However this duration of cell cycle may vary from organism to organism and also from cell type to cell type. Each cell has 2 phases in its life cycle-Interphase and mitotic phase.

During interphase the cell grows and prepares itself for cell division. Mitotic phase is the period of division.
The interphase is the period between two mitotic divisions. It is a critical time in terms of preparation for cell division. Duringinterphase, the nucleus and cytoplasm are metabolically very active and the amount of DNA is doubled. The interphase lasts more than 95% of the duration of cell cycle.

Interphase is divided into 3 phases-G1, S and G2.So the cell cycle usually includes 4 stages-G1, S, G2 and M.

G1 phase: G1 phase is the first growth phase or first gap period. in this phase cell grows in size and prepare the machinery needed for the replication in the next stage. RNA and proteins are synthesized during this period.

 S phase or synthetic phase: During this stage DNA replication takes place. Thus each chromosome now carries a double set of genes. S phase is the longest phase.

G2 phase or second phase or second gap period-it is the premitotic gap phase. During this stage the synthesis of RNA and proteins continue and cell is being prepared for the mitotic division.

M phase is the mitotic phase: It is usually the division phase of the cell. The changes that take place in a mitotic phase are divided in to two stages. Karyokinesis whichis the division of the nucleus. and cytokinesis which is the division of the cytoplasm.
